Welcome to Waste of Fur

Gypsy with her ears up

About a month ago I saw a dog trotting down the center of the road. We see a lot of dogs wandering around so I didn't think anything of it until I heard a cars horn honk and screeching tires.

The dog was almost hit by a car. I looked and whistled and the dog looked at me, like it was wondering if I was the one. I went closer to our fence and could see it was a female German Shepherd. She was shy and when I got too close to the fence she retreated.

SWMBO came out to see what was going on and a few minutes later she (SWMBO) had coaxed her inside the gate. She was covered with mud, her fur was matted and her toenails were worn down from running the roads.

We agreed that she would be safer inside our fence than on the road.

Within a half an hour SWMBO was trying to brush the dried mud off her and the only way to clean her up was a trip to the bath tub. She tolerated it pretty good. She had to soak a bit to soften the mud. It was then we discovered that she was 20 pounds under weight.

She was a bit head shy, but still polite. She didn't try to nip anyone during her ordeal in the bathtub. She was certainly grateful for all the attention.

She could have been anyone's dog. Perhaps a local stray that was abused and ran away from home but with her toenails worn down she may have been a pet left behind by people travelling. She'd put on a lot of miles on those paws of hers.

Now she's part of our pack.
Gypsy the travelers journey has ended.
